PROFILE: NANCY L. KOTTING

Nancy L. KottingNancy Kotting began her riding career in 1968. Prior to her introduction to Dressage in 1978, Ms. Kotting acquired diverse experience in the equine industry including competing Hunters on the intercollegiate circuit in Virginia; breaking young thoroughbreds and legging up returning horses for the track; teaching Pony Club and working as a professional groom.

Understanding that the Art of Dressage is ideally learned via an apprentice relationship to a Master, Ms. Kotting has consistently sought to study with instructors on an extended basis who possess a proven track record of correct, ethical and humane training according to classical methods. Ms. Kotting thus completed her first four years of study with Pan Am Gold Medalist Carol P. Grant in Hartland, Michigan beginning in 1978. In 1979, Nancy began pursuing her undergraduate degree in Political Science and History, returning to work with Carol each summer. Ms. Kotting will always be indebted to Ms. Grant for her generosity in allowing her the privilage of learning, from the beginning, on high caliber, correctly trained horses, a critical component of the learning process.

Upon graduating from University in 1984, Ms. Kotting continued to ride and teach evenings and weekends while she established a career as a trader of fixed income securities. In 1988 she left finance to pursue work in a field more representative of her values, the Alternative Press. In 1994 she acquired a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation and became instrumental in the Preservation movement in the City of Detroit. During these years Nancy continued to ride diligently, successfully bringing along two young horses.

In 1998 Nancy finally committed herself to a career in Dressage full time and in 1999 introduced herself to Olympic medalist and coach Michael Poulin and his wife Sharon. She began studying with them at their facility in DeLeon Springs, Florida. Nancy has just completed her seventh winter season training and competing with the Poulins. Nancy has also worked with Olympic Judge and noted clinician Dr. Volker Moritz, Ingrid Klimke, daughter of famed rider and trainer Reiner Klimke and more recently appeared as a demonstration rider during the North American Dressage Trainers Symposium featuring Christophe Hess, currently director of training and education for the DOKR at Warrendorf.
